Periodontal Care

A little blood in the sink after flossing is the easiest warning sign in dentistry to talk yourself out of. It does not hurt, it stops in a minute, and it seems to happen to everybody.

It is also the first stage of the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Gum disease is quiet for years, and what it destroys along the way is the bone anchoring your teeth. Bone does not grow back.

The good news sits at the front of that timeline. Caught early, gum inflammation usually reverses completely with treatment and better daily habits. Caught late, the goal shifts to holding the line on what is left.

Periodontal care is the treatment for gums that have moved past a routine cleaning. It is part of the preventive dentistry we provide, and it is also the right call when gum pain becomes urgent. Call (330) 492-7889 if your gums are bleeding, swollen, or sore.

What Is Periodontal Care?

Periodontal care is the treatment of gum disease, which is infection and inflammation of the gums and the bone underneath them.

It starts with bacteria. Plaque builds along your gumline daily, and what is not brushed away hardens into tartar. Tartar sits below the gumline where a toothbrush cannot follow, and the bacteria in it keep your gums inflamed.

There are two stages, and the difference between them matters a great deal.

Gingivitis is the early stage. Gums are red, puffy, and bleed easily, but no bone has been lost yet. This stage is reversible. Clear out the buildup, improve the daily routine, and the gums genuinely go back to healthy.

Periodontitis is what gingivitis becomes if it continues. The inflammation reaches deeper, the gum starts pulling away from the tooth, and pockets form between them. Bacteria fill those pockets, where no brushing reaches, and the body’s response destroys the bone holding the tooth. This stage is treatable and controllable, but the bone already lost stays lost.

We measure which stage you are in by checking the depth of the space between your gum and each tooth, and by looking at bone levels on your X-rays. Those numbers, not how your gums look, are what tell us what treatment you need.

Problems Periodontal Care Solves

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss, which is inflammation, not sensitivity.
  • Red, puffy, or tender gums that feel sore when you eat.
  • Persistent bad breath that brushing and mouthwash do not fix, because the source is bacteria below the gumline.
  • Gums pulling back, making teeth look longer and exposing root surfaces that are more prone to decay.
  • Teeth that feel loose or that have started to shift position.
  • Pockets deepening year over year, which is bone quietly disappearing.
  • A bad taste or pus around a tooth, which means active infection.
  • Sensitivity on exposed roots, where there is no enamel to protect the tooth.

How Periodontal Care Works

  1. We measure the pocket depth around every tooth and record it, so we have numbers rather than impressions.
  2. We take or review X-rays to see how much bone is present and whether it has changed.
  3. We show you your own numbers and explain what they mean, tooth by tooth if you want.
  4. For gingivitis, treatment is a thorough cleaning above and just below the gumline, plus a specific plan for what to change at home.
  5. For periodontitis, treatment is deeper cleaning of the root surfaces inside the pockets, removing the hardened deposits the gum has grown away from. We numb the area first. This is often done across more than one appointment, a section of the mouth at a time.
  6. We bring you back to re-measure after healing, because the point is whether the pockets got shallower, not whether the appointment happened.
  7. Once things are stable, you move onto a closer maintenance schedule, usually more often than every six months.

Between appointments your gums will be tender for a day or two and may bleed a little. That settles.

Your Options for Treating Gum Disease

What we recommend follows directly from your measurements, and the honest version is that you do not get to pick past a point.

If your gums are healthy, a routine cleaning and exam every six months is all you need. We will say so.

If you have gingivitis, treatment is a thorough cleaning plus changes at home. This is the stage where you can genuinely undo it, and the home half is not optional. We will be specific about technique rather than just telling you to floss more.

If you have periodontitis, the treatment is deep cleaning of the root surfaces, done with the area numbed, usually across a couple of visits. After healing we re-measure. Most people improve significantly at this point.

If deep cleaning does not resolve it, or if the disease is advanced, the next step is a periodontist, a specialist in gum and bone treatment. We do not perform gum surgery or bone grafting here, so if you need it we will refer you rather than attempting it.

If a tooth cannot be saved, because too much bone is gone, we will tell you straight. Removing it and planning a replacement, like an implant or a bridge, is sometimes the better outcome than holding onto a tooth that is losing bone for the ones next to it.

Maintenance is the part people skip and it is the part that decides the result. Gum disease is a condition you manage, not one you finish. Longer gaps between maintenance visits is the most common reason it comes back.

The Benefits of Getting This Done Right

The main one is keeping your teeth. Gum disease is the leading reason adults lose them, and it does it without much pain to warn you. Treatment stops the bone loss where it is.

Treated gums also stop bleeding, stop being sore, and stop being a source of bad breath that nothing seems to fix. Those changes show up within weeks.

Cost matters too. Treating gingivitis is a cleaning and a conversation. Treating advanced periodontitis can mean deep cleaning, specialist care, and eventually replacing teeth. Every step along that path is more expensive than the one before it.

There is also the practical point that gum health affects everything else we might do for you. Whitening looks wrong on receding gums. Veneers and crowns need healthy gum margins. An implant needs bone. Gum disease limits your options in ways that are easy to miss until you want something done.

How to Know You Need Periodontal Care

Any of these mean your gums need a look:

  • Your gums bleed when you brush or floss, even a little, even sometimes.
  • Your gums look red or swollen rather than firm and pale pink.
  • Your gums feel tender, or they ache when you eat.
  • Bad breath or a bad taste that keeps coming back after brushing.
  • Your teeth look longer than they used to, or you can see a root surface.
  • A tooth feels loose, or your bite feels like it has shifted.
  • Food has started packing between teeth in a way it never used to.
  • Pus or a small swelling along the gumline.
  • New sensitivity along the gumline, particularly to cold.

Urgent versus not urgent. Bleeding that shows up only when you floss can wait for a regular appointment. Do not wait for these: a swollen area on the gum, a bad taste with pus, gum pain that is throbbing, or facial swelling. Those mean active infection. Call us. And if you have facial swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing, go to an emergency room, that is past what a dental visit handles.

What waiting actually costs. This is the clearest example in dentistry. Gingivitis costs a cleaning and reverses entirely. Give it a few years and it becomes periodontitis, which costs deep cleaning across several visits, tighter maintenance forever, and the permanent loss of some bone. Give that a few more years and it costs teeth, plus the cost of replacing them, plus the bone grafting a replacement may then need. There is no stage where waiting is cheaper. Every year of delay converts a reversible problem into a permanent one.

What we see that you cannot. You cannot measure your own pockets, and depth is the whole diagnosis. Gums can look perfectly acceptable in a mirror while sitting at depths that mean established disease, and gums can look unhappy while measuring fine. We compare this year’s numbers against last year’s, which shows whether it is progressing or holding. X-rays show us bone levels you have no way to see. We also notice recession patterns that point at grinding or brushing too hard, both of which need different advice than “floss more”.

Questions worth asking yourself. Does the sink ever have blood in it after I brush? Have I decided that is normal? Do my gums look like they have moved? Does anyone avoid getting close when I talk? Has a dentist ever used the phrase “deep cleaning” with me and I did not follow up?

When this is the right treatment, and when something else is. Periodontal care is right whenever your measurements show disease. It is not right as a substitute for a routine cleaning when your gums are healthy, and we will not recommend it in that case. It is also not the answer when the real problem is a cracked tooth or a cavity causing pain that you have assumed is a gum issue, which happens fairly often. The exam sorts that out. And when the disease has gone past what general dentistry treats, the right answer is a periodontist, not more of the same treatment here.

What Does Periodontal Care Cost?

Cost depends on the stage and how much of your mouth is involved. A cleaning for gingivitis and deep cleaning across all four sections of the mouth are quite different, and treating one problem area is different again.

Dental plans often treat gum treatment differently from routine cleanings, including how frequently maintenance visits are covered. We go over your benefits with you before treatment starts, so the number is settled beforehand.

We take cash, check, and credit cards, and we offer CareCredit financing, which helps when treatment is spread across several appointments.

Insurance carriers accepted have not been confirmed for this practice yet, so no plan or coverage level is named here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a deep cleaning the same as a regular cleaning?

No. A regular cleaning handles the surfaces at and just below the gumline. A deep cleaning goes into the pockets that form when gums pull away, cleaning root surfaces a normal cleaning cannot reach. The area is numbed first.

Does periodontal treatment hurt?

The treatment itself should not, because we numb the area. Afterward the gums are usually tender for a day or two and may bleed slightly. That is normal healing.

Can gum disease be cured?

Gingivitis can be fully reversed. Periodontitis can be stopped and controlled, but bone that has already been lost does not grow back, which is why catching it early matters so much.

Why do I need cleanings more often now?

Once pockets have formed, they collect bacteria faster than healthy gums do. More frequent maintenance is what keeps the disease from progressing again. It is the difference between managing it and losing ground.

Do my gums have anything to do with the rest of my health?

Gum disease is an active infection, and it is worth treating for that reason alone. If you have a health condition you are managing, tell us, and tell your physician about your gum treatment as well. We will keep our part of the picture accurate rather than making broader claims.

Will I lose teeth?

Not necessarily, and that depends heavily on when treatment starts. Many people who begin treatment keep every tooth. If a specific tooth has lost too much bone, we will tell you clearly rather than letting you find out later.

Do you do gum surgery here?

No. If your gums need surgical treatment or bone grafting, we refer you to a periodontist. We will handle the diagnosis, the deep cleaning, and the coordination.

I am an anxious patient when it comes to the dentist. I recently had to have a molar pulled and a bone graft. Dr. Mohn and Renee made sure I was completely numb and comfortable. They answered all my questions about the procedure thoroughly, which helped ease my anxiety. When Dr. Mohn told me my tooth was out; I was in disbelief because it went so fast! 10/10 Also, they submitted all the forms to my insurance. I knew my out of pocket prior to the procedure. No surprises! All the staff I've encountered have been super helpful and friendly!
