Dentures

Losing most or all of your teeth changes more than eating. It changes how you speak, how your face is shaped, and often how willing you are to be in a photograph.

Dentures address all of that. They replace missing teeth and the gum tissue around them, restoring your bite and supporting your cheeks and lips so your face keeps its proportions.

They also have a reputation, mostly earned by dentures that were never adjusted properly. A denture that fits is not something you fight with. Getting there takes several appointments and some patient adjusting, and that process is the difference between a denture you use and one that lives in a drawer.

Dentures are part of our restorative dentistry work. Call (330) 492-7889 and we will talk through what your situation actually calls for.

What Are Dentures?

A denture is a removable replacement for missing teeth and the surrounding gum tissue. It is custom made from impressions of your mouth, so it is shaped to your ridges and your bite rather than to a standard form.

A full denture replaces all the teeth in an arch, upper or lower or both. It rests directly on the gum and the bone underneath. An upper denture is held largely by suction against the palate. A lower denture has less surface to work with, which is why lower dentures usually take more getting used to.

A denture does two jobs people tend to notice separately. The obvious one is chewing. The less obvious one is facial support. Lips and cheeks rest on your teeth, and without them the face loses height and looks collapsed around the mouth. A properly made denture restores that.

We do not provide implant-supported dentures here. That is a denture anchored onto implants so it clicks into place, and it is a different treatment. Even though we do place implants for individual teeth, implant-supported dentures are not something this practice offers. If that is what you want, we will tell you at the consultation rather than partway through treatment.

Whether this practice makes partial dentures for patients who still have some of their own teeth has not been confirmed yet. This page describes partials factually as an option, without firmly claiming the practice makes them.

Problems Dentures Solve

  • Most or all teeth missing in an arch, replaced so you can eat properly again.
  • Eating limited to soft food, which affects nutrition more than people expect.
  • A face that has changed shape, as lips and cheeks lose the support teeth used to provide.
  • Speech that has changed, because teeth are part of how many sounds are formed.
  • Avoiding photographs and social situations, which is the reason many patients actually come in.
  • Teeth failing one after another, where an ongoing series of extractions has an endpoint worth planning for.
  • An old denture that no longer fits, because the bone underneath has changed shape over years.
  • A denture that hurts, rubs sores, or will not stay put during a meal.
  • A broken denture, which can often be repaired.

How Getting Dentures Works

This is a process, not an appointment. Several visits over a few weeks, and the fitting stages are what determine whether the result works.

  1. Consultation and exam. We look at your remaining teeth, your gums, and the shape of your ridges, and take X-rays to check the bone underneath.
  2. The plan. We go through your options honestly, including keeping teeth that can be kept. A tooth worth saving is worth saving even when a denture is coming.
  3. Any extractions first. Teeth that cannot be kept are removed, and the gums are given time to heal, because the ridge shape changes considerably in the weeks after extraction.
  4. Impressions. Detailed impressions of your ridges, which is the foundation of fit.
  5. Bite records and try-in. We work out how your jaws should meet, then you try in a wax version with the teeth set in place. This is the stage to speak up. Shade, tooth shape, and how much of the teeth show can all be changed now and not later.
  6. Fabrication, at a dental lab, from the approved try-in.
  7. Fitting. The finished denture goes in, we check the fit and the bite, and adjust.
  8. Adjustments. Expect a few of these, and expect them to be necessary rather than a sign something went wrong. Gums develop sore spots as they adapt, and each adjustment relieves one. This stage is where dentures either become comfortable or get abandoned.
  9. Follow-up, to check fit and tissue health, and at regular intervals afterward.

Your Options When Many Teeth Are Missing

A full denture, when all the teeth in an arch are gone or going. The least expensive way to replace a full arch and the fastest. It comes out for cleaning, and it takes some adaptation, particularly on the lower jaw.

An immediate denture, placed at the time your remaining teeth are removed, so you are not without teeth. It is a real advantage socially. The trade is that your gums and bone change shape a lot as they heal underneath it, so it needs relining or replacing later. Whether this practice provides immediate dentures has not been confirmed yet.

A partial denture, when you still have healthy teeth. It fills the gaps and clasps onto the remaining teeth. Less expensive than a bridge or implants, and removable.

A bridge, if only one or a few teeth are missing in a row and the neighboring teeth are strong. Fixed, does not come out, but it means crowning two healthy teeth.

Dental implants, for individual missing teeth. We place these. Longest lasting, keeps the bone, does not involve the neighboring teeth. Not practical for a full arch at this practice, since implant-supported dentures are not something we provide.

Keeping teeth you still have. Worth stating plainly, because patients sometimes arrive assuming everything has to go. A tooth with good bone support and a treatable problem is usually worth keeping, and keeping natural teeth helps hold a partial denture in place and preserves bone. We will tell you which of your teeth are worth keeping rather than clearing an arch for convenience.

The honest limits of dentures. A denture is not the same as natural teeth and we are not going to pretend it is. Chewing force is lower, so very hard or very sticky foods stay difficult. Lower dentures move more than upper ones because there is less surface holding them. Adapting takes weeks and speech feels odd at first. And the bone underneath continues to shrink slowly over years, which is why a denture that fit well five years ago may need relining. Knowing all that in advance is what makes the adaptation manageable.

The Benefits of Getting This Done Right

You eat properly again. A well-fitted denture restores enough function to bring most foods back, which matters for nutrition and for enjoying meals rather than managing them.

Your face regains its shape. The change is often more noticeable to patients than the teeth themselves, because it is what makes them look like themselves again.

Speech comes back. Once you have adapted, sounds that had become difficult stop being difficult.

And people stop avoiding things. Photographs, eating out, laughing without thinking about it. That is what most patients name first when they come back for a check.

The phrase “done right” is doing real work in that heading. The difference between a denture that delivers all of the above and one that sits unused comes down to the try-in stage and the adjustment appointments. Those are not optional extras, they are the treatment.

How to Know Dentures Might Be Right for You

Consider dentures if:

  • You are missing most or all of your teeth in one or both arches.
  • Several teeth are failing and you are facing extractions with no plan for what follows.
  • You have been eating only soft food for a while.
  • Your face looks different, sunken or shorter around the mouth.
  • Your speech has changed because of missing teeth.
  • You avoid photographs or social situations because of your teeth.
  • You have an old denture that no longer fits, moves around, or has started rubbing sores.
  • Your denture broke or a tooth came off it.
  • Implants for every missing tooth are out of reach on cost, and you need a workable answer.

Signs something else fits better. If only one or a few teeth are missing and the rest are healthy, a bridge or an implant is a better answer than a partial denture. If your remaining teeth are salvageable, treating them beats clearing the arch. If gum disease is active, periodontal care comes first, because a denture resting on unhealthy tissue will not be comfortable. And if what you actually want is a denture that clips onto implants, that is not a service we provide, and knowing that now saves you time.

Urgent versus not urgent. Denture treatment is planned. But call promptly for a broken denture, a denture rubbing a sore that is not healing, or pain from a failing tooth under a partial. A sore spot that has been there more than two weeks also needs looking at, and an oral cancer screening is part of why.

What waiting actually costs. The main cost is bone. The ridge of bone that held your teeth shrinks once the teeth are gone, faster in the first year and then steadily. That matters in two ways. A denture made on a well-shaped ridge fits and holds better than one made on a flattened ridge, so waiting years after extractions makes a good fit harder to achieve. And it narrows your future options, because implants need bone. The other cost is easier to overlook: months of eating only soft food affects nutrition, and years of avoiding meals with other people has its own weight. There is also the cost of a badly fitting old denture, which can rub the tissue underneath it persistently. That is worth having looked at rather than tolerating.

What we see that you cannot. The shape and quality of the bone ridge under your gums, which decides how well any denture will hold. Whether the teeth you still have are worth keeping, which depends on bone support you cannot see. Whether an existing denture is actually the wrong fit or simply needs adjusting, which are different problems with different costs. Whether sore spots are ordinary pressure points or something else. And how your jaws should meet, which is a measured judgment and is what makes a denture comfortable to chew with.

Questions worth asking yourself. How much of my diet have I quietly given up? Do I have teeth I have written off that might be savable? Is my current denture uncomfortable, or just old? How long have I been putting this off? Am I willing to come back for the adjustment appointments, because that is the part that decides the outcome?

What Do Dentures Cost?

Denture cost depends on whether it is a full or partial denture, whether it is one arch or both, the materials used, and whether extractions or other treatment come first. An immediate denture placed at extraction and a conventional denture made after healing are priced differently too.

Dental plans usually treat dentures as major restorative care, often with waiting periods and annual maximums that a full-arch case can reach. We go over your benefits and your coverage before treatment starts, and we will map out how the costs land across the appointments rather than presenting one number at the end.

We take cash, check, and credit cards, and we offer CareCredit financing, which is commonly used for denture treatment because the cost is spread across several visits.

Insurance carriers accepted have not been confirmed for this practice yet, so no plan, coverage level, or waiting period is stated here.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to get used to dentures?

Usually a few weeks. Speech settles first, then eating. Lower dentures generally take longer than upper ones. Sore spots in the early weeks are normal and each one can be adjusted, which is exactly what the follow-up visits are for.

Will my dentures look natural?

They are made to suit your face, and you approve the shade, shape, and tooth position at the try-in stage before the denture is finished. That try-in is your opportunity to change anything, so use it.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

You will get most foods back, and it takes practice. Start with softer food cut small and build up. Very hard and very sticky foods stay difficult, and that is honest rather than a fitting problem.

Do I have to take them out at night?

Generally yes. Taking them out lets the tissue underneath rest and recover, and they should be cleaned and kept in water or solution overnight. We will go through the routine with you.

How do I clean them?

Brush them daily with a denture brush and cleaner, not regular toothpaste, which is too abrasive. Rinse after meals. Clean your gums and tongue as well, and keep the denture in liquid when it is out so it does not dry and distort.

My denture is loose. Can it be fixed?

Often yes. Bone changes shape over time, and a reline reshapes the denture base to fit the ridge as it is now. Do not use over-the-counter adhesives indefinitely to compensate, come in and have it looked at.

My denture broke. Can you repair it?

Bring it in and we will look at it. Many breaks and detached teeth can be repaired. Do not glue it yourself, household adhesives are not safe in your mouth and they usually make a proper repair harder.

Can you do implant-supported dentures or snap-in dentures?

No, that is not a service we provide here. We do place individual dental implants, but a denture anchored onto implants is a different treatment and not one we offer. We will tell you at the consultation.

Do I have to have all my teeth out?

Not unless they genuinely cannot be kept. Teeth with good bone support and a treatable problem are usually worth saving, and keeping natural teeth helps hold a partial in place and preserves bone. We will be straight with you about which teeth those are.

I am an anxious patient when it comes to the dentist. I recently had to have a molar pulled and a bone graft. Dr. Mohn and Renee made sure I was completely numb and comfortable. They answered all my questions about the procedure thoroughly, which helped ease my anxiety. When Dr. Mohn told me my tooth was out; I was in disbelief because it went so fast! 10/10 Also, they submitted all the forms to my insurance. I knew my out of pocket prior to the procedure. No surprises! All the staff I've encountered have been super helpful and friendly!
