Dental Veneers

Some things about a smile cannot be brushed or bleached away. A front tooth chipped years ago on a bottle cap. A gap that has always been there. One tooth that sits slightly behind the others, or a stain that whitening simply does not touch.

Veneers deal with the front surface of a tooth directly. A thin custom shell is bonded over it, and the shape, shade, and alignment you see afterward belong to the veneer rather than to what was underneath.

They are the most involved option in our cosmetic dentistry range, and the most transformative. They are also permanent in a way whitening is not, which is why we spend real time on the conversation before anything starts.

Call (330) 492-7889 or request a consultation, and we will tell you honestly whether veneers are the right answer for what you want changed, or whether something simpler will do it.

What Are Dental Veneers?

A dental veneer is a thin custom-made shell that covers the front surface of a tooth. It is bonded in place and becomes the visible face of that tooth.

Each veneer is made for one specific tooth in one specific mouth. The shade is chosen to work with the teeth around it, and the shape is designed for your face and your bite rather than pulled off a shelf.

Veneers are for front teeth and the teeth just behind them, the ones people actually see. Back teeth take heavy chewing force and get treated differently, usually with a filling or a crown.

People typically get veneers on one or two teeth to fix a specific problem, or on several across the front to change the look of the whole smile. Both are normal, and the right number is the number that solves what is bothering you.

The exact veneer material used at this practice, porcelain, composite, or both, has not been confirmed yet. This page describes veneers generically and makes no material claim.

Problems Dental Veneers Solve

  • A chipped or worn front tooth, where the shape rather than the health of the tooth is the problem.
  • Stain that whitening will not lift, including grey discoloration and developmental white or brown spots.
  • A gap between front teeth that you would rather close without orthodontic treatment.
  • A tooth slightly out of line with the ones around it, where the goal is appearance rather than correcting the bite.
  • Teeth that look short or uneven in length.
  • Small or oddly shaped teeth that never quite matched their neighbors.
  • An old front-tooth filling that has discolored at the edges and keeps needing replacing.
  • Holding back a full smile and having done it long enough that it has become a habit.

How Getting Veneers Works

  1. Consultation. You tell us exactly what bothers you. We examine your teeth, gums, and bite, and take X-rays if we need to see what is underneath.
  2. Honest assessment. We tell you whether veneers are the right tool. Sometimes whitening or a filling gets you most of the way for far less, and we would rather say so.
  3. Planning. We agree on shade, shape, and how many teeth. Whitening usually happens first if you want it, because veneers are matched to your final shade and cannot be bleached later.
  4. Health first. Any cavity or gum problem gets treated before we start. A veneer bonded to a decayed tooth or against inflamed gums fails.
  5. Preparation. A small amount of enamel is usually removed from the front of the tooth, so the veneer sits flush rather than looking bulky. This is the step that makes veneers permanent, and we will explain exactly what it means for you.
  6. Impressions or a scan, which go to the lab that makes your veneers.
  7. Temporaries, if your teeth were prepared, so you are not left with exposed enamel while you wait.
  8. Fitting. We try each veneer in and check shade, shape, and fit before anything is bonded, and you look in a mirror and approve them.
  9. Bonding. Once you are happy, each veneer is bonded permanently and the bite is adjusted.
  10. Follow-up, to check the fit, your gums, and how they feel after a week or two of normal use.

Your Options for Fixing a Front Tooth

Veneers are one answer among several, and they are the biggest commitment. Here is the honest comparison.

Whitening, if your only complaint is color and the discoloration is the kind that responds. It is far cheaper, nothing is removed, and nothing is permanent. Whitening should always be ruled out before veneers when color is the issue.

A bonded filling, for a small chip. A white composite filling can rebuild a chipped corner in one visit, without removing healthy enamel. It will not last as long as a veneer and may discolor at the edges over years, but it is reversible and much less expensive. For one small chip this is often the better answer and we will say so.

A veneer, when you want a lasting change to shape, or when stain will not respond to whitening, or when several teeth need to look consistent. This is the option that gives the most control over the result, and it is the one that involves removing a little enamel.

A crown, if the tooth is heavily broken down or has a large old filling. A crown covers the whole tooth rather than just the front. That is a strength question, not a cosmetic one, and it is the right call when there is not enough solid tooth left to support a veneer. Note that we do not offer same-day or CEREC crowns here, so a crown means a lab and more than one visit.

Orthodontic treatment, if teeth are genuinely crooked and the bite is part of the problem. We do not provide orthodontics or Invisalign at this practice, so if that is what you actually need, we will refer you rather than putting veneers over a problem they do not solve.

Doing nothing, which is a real option for a cosmetic concern. Nobody here will push you toward elective treatment.

What veneers ask of you. Because enamel is usually removed, the tooth will always need something covering it from then on. If a veneer chips or comes loose in fifteen years, it gets replaced rather than removed and forgotten. That is the trade for the result, and it is worth understanding clearly before you agree.

The Benefits of Getting This Done Right

Veneers change what a tooth looks like more completely than anything short of a crown. Shape, shade, length, and the appearance of alignment are all set by the veneer, so problems that nothing else touches get resolved.

Done well, they do not announce themselves. Shade matched to the teeth beside them, shape suited to your face, and edges finished flush at the gumline is what separates veneers that look like teeth from veneers that look like veneers. That comes down to planning and the try-in step, which is why we do not skip it.

They are also stable in color. A veneer does not pick up coffee stain the way natural enamel does, so the shade you approve is close to the shade you keep.

And there is the ordinary human part. People who have spent years managing how they smile in photographs generally stop thinking about it. That is the reason most patients actually give.

How to Know Veneers Are Right for You

Veneers are elective, so the trigger is that something bothers you. These point toward veneers specifically:

  • A front tooth is chipped, worn, or shaped in a way you have never liked.
  • You have had whitening, or been told whitening will not work, and the color still bothers you.
  • One tooth is noticeably darker than the rest and there is no active problem inside it.
  • There is a gap between your front teeth you would like closed.
  • Your front teeth are uneven in length or one sits slightly out of line.
  • An old front filling keeps discoloring and you are tired of replacing it.
  • You cover your mouth or angle your face in photographs.
  • Your teeth and gums are otherwise healthy.

Signs something else fits better. If the tooth has a large cavity or very little solid structure left, a crown is the correct answer, not a veneer. If your teeth are properly crooked and your bite is affected, that is orthodontic work and we would refer you. If you grind your teeth heavily, veneers can chip, so that needs addressing first and may point to a different plan. If your gums have receded, treat that first or the veneer edge will end up visible later. And if the only problem is color and it is the type that bleaches, whitening is cheaper and takes nothing away.

Urgent versus not urgent. Veneers are never urgent. But a tooth that hurts, one that broke recently, or gums that are bleeding all need attention before cosmetic work, and those are handled as ordinary or urgent care first. A tooth that chipped and now has a sharp edge or feels sensitive is not a cosmetic problem yet, it is a repair.

What waiting actually costs. For the cosmetic side, nothing. A chip you have lived with for ten years can wait another year. What does have a cost is a chipped tooth left with exposed dentin, because that surface decays faster and is more prone to further breakage. So the distinction matters: waiting on appearance is free, waiting on a damaged tooth is not. We will tell you which one you have.

What we see that you cannot. Whether there is enough healthy enamel to bond a veneer to at all, which is the single biggest factor in whether veneers will last. Whether that dark tooth is discolored on the surface or from the inside, because those need completely different treatment. Whether your bite will put force on the veneer edges, which is what causes chipping. Whether you grind at night, which shows in wear patterns you would never notice. And whether the result you have described is achievable on your teeth, which is worth knowing before you commit.

Questions worth asking yourself. Is it the color, the shape, or the position that bothers me? Is it one tooth or several? Have I actually tried whitening? Am I comfortable with something permanent? Do I clench or grind, and has anyone mentioned it?

What Do Dental Veneers Cost?

Veneer cost depends on how many teeth are involved, the material used, and whether anything needs treating first. Each veneer is individually made, so cost scales with the number.

Veneers are elective cosmetic treatment, so dental plans generally do not cover them. If a tooth is being restored for structural reasons rather than appearance, that can be a different conversation, and we will check your benefits and tell you where you stand.

We take cash, check, and credit cards, and we offer CareCredit financing, which is what most patients use for multi-tooth cosmetic work. You will have your full cost in writing before we begin.

Insurance carriers accepted have not been confirmed for this practice yet. Cosmetic veneers are not typically covered regardless.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do veneers last?

They last many years with reasonable care, and eventually they need replacing. How long depends on the material, your bite, and whether you grind. We will give you a realistic expectation for your own situation rather than a number off a brochure.

Is getting veneers painful?

Preparation is done with the area numbed, so the appointment itself should be comfortable. Some sensitivity afterward is normal while your teeth settle, particularly to cold, and it fades.

Do you have to file down my teeth?

Usually a small amount of enamel is removed from the front so the veneer sits flush instead of looking thick. How much depends on the tooth and the material. We will explain exactly what your teeth need before you decide.

Are veneers reversible?

Generally no. Once enamel has been removed, the tooth needs a veneer or crown covering it from then on. That is the honest trade for the result and it should be part of your decision.

Will people be able to tell?

Not if they are planned and made well. Shade matched to your other teeth, the right shape for your face, and clean edges at the gumline are what make the difference. That is why we try them in and get your approval before bonding.

Can I get just one veneer?

Yes, and it is common. Matching a single veneer to your existing teeth takes care, and it is very doable.

Should I whiten before getting veneers?

Yes, if you want your teeth lighter. Veneers are matched to your shade at the time they are made and cannot be whitened afterward. Whitening first means the veneer matches the smile you actually want.

What if a veneer chips or comes off?

Call us. A loose veneer can often be re-bonded. A chipped one usually needs replacing. Either way, do not leave the tooth uncovered, because the prepared surface underneath is vulnerable.

I am an anxious patient when it comes to the dentist. I recently had to have a molar pulled and a bone graft. Dr. Mohn and Renee made sure I was completely numb and comfortable. They answered all my questions about the procedure thoroughly, which helped ease my anxiety. When Dr. Mohn told me my tooth was out; I was in disbelief because it went so fast! 10/10 Also, they submitted all the forms to my insurance. I knew my out of pocket prior to the procedure. No surprises! All the staff I've encountered have been super helpful and friendly!
